The Right to be Outraged
I’m standing on my right to be outraged today by a discussion that took place in a medium I shall not reveal for various reasons: in which the extent of the influence of misogynist, pedophile, slime on popular thought and morality was glaringly, painfully, sickeningly exposed.
What does one do in a discussion where one finds oneself hopelessly outnumbered – as in, being the ONLY person to have a problem with – the following concepts:
1. Japanese schoolgirls who sell their panties to vendors who then sell them to goddamned perverts have just found a clever and easy way to make money.
2. There’s nothing wrong with this, not with the practice, or the men who do it – its just their society.
3. Whatever the law says is legal is completely and totally moral. Legality and morality are exactly equivalent, completely fluid from society to society, and there are no basic human values like compassion or a wish to promote the survival and well being of the human race that surpass the law in any country, no matter how that law came about.
4. Since in other countries it is legal to drag a woman out in the street and brutally murder her for talking to a male who isn’t a relative, that is perfectly moral in that country, even though people in that very country speak up about it as being cruel and horrible.
5. No matter how horrific the treatment of innocent children or the underclass in a particular country and society, we should just mind our own business and say nothing. After all those are THEIR people and THEY can treat THEM however they like, it isn’t our business.
Leave it to the pedophiles and the pornographers who have seized control of the media to have successfully promoted the moral ideas that (for ironically enough all the above statements are based on a sort of morality):
1. Objecting to seeing a weak or innocent person be tortured and killed on the basis of some purported essential recognition of their humanity is JUST AS BAD as if you are a religious rightist peering into people’s bedrooms with a hidden camera and ordering them arrested for having happy joyful totally consensual and mutually orgasmic oral sex. Because it’s a slippery slope, doncha know. If you assert any morality in the world exists, ANY MORALITY AT ALL, even that of “killing children for no good reason is wrong”, you are on the dark road to violent repressive fundamentalism! There is no room for a middle ground between establishing a recognition of the common good and violent repressive tyranny.
2. THOSE people are separate from US people. What THOSE people do may be barbaric and incomprehensible, but minding our own business is a sacred human moral and so what THOSE people do to THEIR women and children (a tacit admission that women and children are property, not human) is their business. There’s a right to privacy and agency and all, you know – for rich men only. The massive outcry by women and children that they do not want to be beaten and murdered and raped doesn’t count – THOSE people (meaning only the adult men of that country) decided it is moral and legal to do so, and also that it is moral and legal for the women and children to have no voice in the matter, and so WE should just – leave them alone. Otherwise we’d be FORCING OUR MORALITY ON THEM (”them” being only the men). If THEY don’t like it why don’t they just leave?
3. Oh and of course any criticism of a behavior is the same as saying “I want to outlaw this and jail you for life because you have engaged in this behavior.” Any criticism of a behavior in a foreign country is the same as saying “We must invade and bomb them until they behave the way we want them to.” So when you say “porn degrades women” you are really saying “all men who have ever glanced at Playboy should be jailed for life!” And when you say honor killings are wrong you are really saying “We must kill all Muslims!”
This is the pop morality culture of the young now, as brought to you by Heinlein, pornography, Girls Gone Wild, libertarianism, Ayn Rand, Thelemites, and rich pedophiles in positions of power anywhere. They have presented a firm philosophical wall of mumbo-jumbo with which they have managed to convince many people that if they think grown men coercing little girls into having sex with them is reprehensible, it makes them a bad person for thinking so. Legality is morality – so anything your lawyer can get you off for is okay and should not be criticized. Anyone who says otherwise is the real bad person.
Welcome to hell.
I’m shaking and ill now. I was brainwashed at a young age to believe being outraged was passe and a product of religious thought only and that being hard and cold and not letting any story, no matter how horrific, have any emotional impact on me was the right way to go. That was how to be cool. Innocence was defined being able to be outraged and horrified at something and innocence had to be destroyed, being the uncool thing it was. The younger innocence could be taken, the better.
But no. I demand the right to be outraged at the above concepts being considered the standard “modern” morality of our culture, and furthermore I demand the right to be outraged by these gross offenses against the human community without being labeled a fundamentalist religious prude (as I am indeed none of those things). Screw the black and white either/or false dichotomy of choices we are presented with. There is a middle ground between living like the people in that recently exposed LDS community and yawning with indifference at the rape of children.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem a bit pissed off. That was, admittedly, a small joke.
We discovered your site seeking an appropriate image for a posting on our site, http://www.allnudist.wordpress.com, and your logo was absolutely perfect. You are linked to our posting and we hope you approve.
We tend to get a little political once in a while and some of Mc Cain’s antics have caused us to comment, though that is not the focus of a website promoting a healthy, non-sexual enjoyment of life sans-clothes.
Our stats indicate that links we provide are visited and we hope that you get some promo out of this. You deserve it.
I wish we could add a permanent link to you in our ‘links’ list but that would not be in keeping with the aim of our site. History shows, though, that our visitors will continue to find your link as they look up past postings so you should continue to get some traffic, at least.
You’re doing great work, if only our politicians cared as much as you. Alas, that will never happen. No money in it.
All that said, keep it up. SOMEBODY has to. Angie & Steve

Knowing that people like this aren’t being picked off by anonymous snipers left and right makes my hope for humanity slip further by the nanosecond.
But is all this really that new? Rich, white men have been raping, pillaging, and plundering pretty pretty much whatever they please for about a millennium now, so those of us who want to cut them off at the knees have our work cut out for us.
At least some of them are aware that there’s a resistance. They know we’re coming for them, and they’re scared shitless. The problem is men are more dangerous when they’re scared. Think KKK. Think Third Reich.
I think I’m not telling you anything you don’t know. *shrug* It’d be an honor to be called your ally, nonetheless. Shit is insane, as it always has been.

Hey Amananta, can I add you to my blogroll? I wanted to read this whole post and comment on it but I have to run. I will be back to read the rest.
Here is my new blog:

Wow. Seriously, wow. You’re awesome. It’s nice to meet fellow feminist geeks out there. Can I blogroll you, too?

Ahh, I love your lucid and powerful rants, Amananta! I am also sick of this “marketplace of ideas” “everything is nothing and nothing is everything” liberal BS. It makes me crazy. Libertarianism is practically evil for simultaneously claiming that it is “amoral” and yet assigns values to people’s lives and humanity according to their race, gender, sex, religion, etc.

Excellent post.

Lemur – sure, if you want to.
Lara – yeah she makes her point better than I did. Even though women in those countries protest the killings men here say “oh it’s just their culture” – showing that they only consider the opinion of the most violent men counts. Says a lot about their morals, doesn’t it?
I’m so tired of the “might makes right” attitude. Humans evolved to where they are now because of brains, not brawn anyway. Most other animals have more physical strength and defenses than we do. It is only our clever hands and brains in combination with each other that have brought us to where we are, and women do not lack in these areas, so the ev psych people can just shove their petty rationalizations up their butts.

This is rather fantastic.
“This is the pop morality culture of the young now, as brought to you by Heinlein, pornography, Girls Gone Wild, libertarianism, Ayn Rand, Thelemites, and rich pedophiles in positions of power anywhere. ”
Right on.
Except I am “young” and I know other youngster’s who would high-five your hand off your arm for this post (that is *good* btw).

That is cool :) There are always those who don’t go along with dominant culture, of course. I just meant – well I tend to often be around large groups of people in their early 20s and they all seem to think this way when they start talking. Either that or the ones who disagree feel so outnumbered they don’t want to say anything.
